And the answer is: It depends… which one of the effects benzos induce do you classify as marker for their strength. Benzodiazepines can have hypnotic, anxiolytic, muscle relaxant effects, and every single one of them has different properties when it comes to said effects. One will be more hypnotic (sleep inducing) while other one will be less hypnotic but more anxiolytic etc. If it comes to anxiety reduction: lorazepam will probably somewhere in the top ones. Clonazepam, nitrazepam, flunitrazepam – these will be most likely to put you to sleep the quickest. Diazepam, bromazepam — those will be probably most powerful all-rounders Anyway, here you go, check this list and have in mind that you can have slightly different reaction depending on your very organism. But that’s a guide. And before that I’ll advise you not to take benzodiazepines brainlessly without a serious reason… It’s not that I want to moralize or something, as I am in no way anybody important to you, but I strongly believe that benzodiazepine withdrawal is something you really wouldn’t like to experience. Severe withdrawal from high doses can be dangerous and can even provoke seizures. If possible, avoid starting Xanax. If you’re stable on it, so be it. If your anxiety escalates or you’ve become dependent upon it you may want to talk to your doc about how to switch to a slower acting benzo like an equivalent dose of diazepam (0.5mg xanax = 5mg diazepam) and reduce that slowly, say by a mg every week or two as tolerated, with a view to stopping it.The underlying anxiety will still require attention.
